The Internet started in the 1960s as a way for government researchers to share information. Computers in the '60s were large and immobile and in order to make use of information stored in any one computer, one had to either travel to the site of the computer or have magnetic computer tapes sent through the conventional postal system.

That need to connect, that deep need to join forces, share information, and learn all that we can about one another has taken root in humanity and is expressed via the internet. Today, billions of us share our thoughts, feelings, data, and resources with the world online, and it is hard, even for those of us who came before Generation Z, to imagine life without it. 1. There are 4.57 billion Internet users as of January 2021. This represents 59% of the global population. Ten years ago, in 2010, fewer than 2 billion people were online.
