How about having a third thumb?

Hey folks πŸ‘‹ I am Ganesh Ram and I am back with another interesting tech. The tech product is a part our body our thumb but it is designed by Dani Clode(a prosthetic arm designer). A robotic thumb that was started as a experiment in the name of "Third Thumb" award winning graduate project at the Royal College of Art in London, England.

The Third Thumb represents augmentation of the human body unlike natural restoration of normal human functionality. Even though scientists are not sure about the long-term consequences of extra cognitive load that will be given to the brain from this robotic thumb. They experimented the thumb with 36 people to demonstrate the ability of the brain to adapt to a new body organ. The 36 participants told the scientists that they feel like the prosthetic thumb is becoming part of their body and some participants was taking some time to say goodbye to the thumb. The thumb is controlled by our feet and two motors controlled by two pressure sensors that are fitted into our shoes under our toes. The feet control may look weird but Clode compared it to driving a car or playing a piano using foot pedals. The participants wore the thumb each day 2 to 6 hours for 5 days and a control group was also created in which participants used a static third thumb with no robotic capability.  The daily use of the thumb  resulted in  new finger coordination patterns. The participants used the thumb for various multi tasking stuff like browsing the internet and taking keys from their pocket, flipping the pages of a book while peeling a banana with other fingers and so on.

Looking ahead, the team would like to develop a Third Thumb that’s easy to use while walking (a problem with the current design) and also a prosthetic that’s safe to use in an fMRI scanner, which would allow the team to study the brain while the device is in use.
